P1. The Olympic Games were held every four years.

P1. A powerful earthquake  destroyed much of Olympia and the ancient Olympic Games came to an end.

P2. A Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin wanted to bring the Olympic Games back to life.

P2. In 1894 he invited his friends and colleagues to a meeting in Paris, France and told them his idea to bring back the modern Olympic Games.

P2. New Zealand was one of the 13 nations represented at the signing of the IOC.

P3. At the ancient Olympic Games, awards were given to athlete, artists, musicians and writers.

P3. In keeping with this idea Pierre de Coubertin created symbols and encouraged ceremonies, music and pageantry in the modern.

P3. This combination of sport and culture makes the Olympic games very different from other sports events.
